🚀 LATEST DEVELOPMENTS
Breakdown: Meta has revealed that it will be bringing together its top two AI research teams in order to realize its long-term goals of creating general AI that will be useful for everyone.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the combination of both teams will accelerate its work in advancing the technology.
🔑 Main Points:
The goal of developing open-source AGI is tailored towards developing the best AI assistants, AI for businesses, and AI for creators.
The research teams are currently training Llama-3, according to Zuckerberg.
Mark also announced that Meta has plans to acquire around 350,000 H100 graphic processing units (GPUs) from chip giant NVIDIA by the end of 2024. (currently priced at ~10.5 billion).
Meta plans to host the largest AI system in the world.
Broader Context: This announcement asserts Meta as a competitive powerhouse against OpenAI and Microsoft. Meta plans to leverage Open Source AGI, democratizing AGI advancements better than other competitors with closed models. Mark Zuckerberg's end goal remains to merge AI with the Metaverse.

Breakdown: A tipster, on Wednesday, revealed Google's plan to add an image generator to Bard. This happened after he stumbled upon a set of unreleased patch notes by the company.
🔑 Main Points:
Dylan Roussel, the tipster, wrote: “Here’s what’s coming next in Bard, tomorrow. Image generation with Bard will use Imagen, Google’s Text-to-Image ‘diffusion technology’.”
Google is seemingly planning to install its AI image generator into Bard in much the same way DALL-E now mainly operates from OpenAI’s ChatGPT
Bard was asked if an AI image generator is coming to its service and it responded with, “Google is indeed planning to add an AI image generator to Bard..."
Google has not released an official update confirming the leak and the AI image generator is not yet on Google Bard.
Broader Context: Google has been discreet about its AI Image Generator, Imagen, currently in its second model, with limited access to the general public. The potential integration of Imagen into Bard would signify the first widespread release of Google's image-to-text technology, if and when it occurs.
Breakdown: Novelist Rie Kudan disclosed that she'd "made active use of generative AI like ChatGPT" for her award-winning novel, The Tokyo Tower of Sympathy.
🔑 Main Points:
This disclosure was made during the ceremony of one of Japan's most prestigious literary awards, the Akutagawa Prize, on Wednesday.
Rie Kudan revealed that about five percent of the book quoted verbatim the sentences generated by AI.
The Tokyo Tower of Sympathy had recently been praised by unwitting judges with glowing reviews with terms such as "flawless."
Broader Context: This current event points a spotlight on the ongoing raging debate over the use of generative AI in the arts. Much of the controversy centers on how these generative AI models were trained on tons of copyrighted material as well as potential images posted on the internet.
A new study conducted by UCL researchers shows how recent advances in generative AI help to explain how memories enable humans to learn about the world, re-live old experiences, and construct new experiences for imagination and planning.
Main Points:
The study uses an AI computational model – known as a generative neural network - to simulate how neural networks in the brain learn from and remember a series of events.
The study was done by researchers playing 10,000 images of simple scenes to the model.
This research was published in Nature Human Behaviour and funded by Wellcome.
Broader Context: The generative neural network model explains how new events can be generated during imagination and planning for the future, and why existing memories often contain "gist-like" distortions - in which unique features are generalized and remembered as more like the features in previous events.
